Radical Presence on Campus: Healing-Centered Leadership for Student Wellbeing
Paulette S. Smith (Jennifer Daniels co-author)
In this online course you will learn:
What happens when student wellbeing is approached not only as a clinical concern, but as an institutional leadership responsibility? This Practice Innovations session explores Mindful Morgan, a campus-based wellness initiative developed at Morgan State University to create accessible, culturally responsive opportunities for mindfulness, reflection, connection, and preventive support. Developed through collaboration among social work faculty, the Counseling Center, and community wellness partners, the initiative illustrates how cross-sector partnership can expand the continuum of student support.
Using Mindful Morgan as a practice example, Dr. Paulette S. Smith will discuss healing-centered leadership, lessons from implementation, and emerging findings. The session introducesĀ Radical Presence as a practice-informed approach emphasizing presence, prevention, partnership, participation, and pathways to support. Attendees will leave with practical considerations for developing responsive wellness initiatives within their own campuses, organizations, and communities.
1. Identify key components of healing-centered and macro social work leadership approaches that support student wellbeing within higher education settings.
2. Describe practical strategies for developing collaborative, prevention-oriented wellness initiatives through cross-campus and community partnerships.
3. Examine implementation lessons, accessibility considerations, and leadership challenges involved in creating culturally responsive mindfulness-based wellness programming within institutional environments.
