Leading From Scars, Not Wounds: A Resilency Framework

Susan LaGraves

In this online course you will learn:

Behavioral health leaders often carry the weight of their work without realizing how much it has built up. This workshop draws on research on secondary traumatic stress, the “Leading From Scars, Not Wounds” framework (Ackerman & Maslin-Ostrowski, 2002), and a practical resilience check-in tool. Participants will learn to notice early signs of strain, take better care of themselves, and lead in ways they can sustain over time.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Distinguish between leading from scars and leading from open wounds, and identify which pattern is present in a realistic leadership scenario.
  • Describe how secondary traumatic stress affects judgment, regulation, and decision-making in behavioral health leaders.
  • Use the Leadership Resiliency Self-Monitoring Form to assess personal sustainability across energy, stress, workload, and escalation indicators.
  • Identify research-informed support that can sustain healthy leadership or promote healing.
